Invitation to a guest seminar by James Ord

Invitation to a guest seminar by James Ord

We are happy to invite you to a guest seminar by James Ord, PhD (researcher, Department of Reproductive and Developmental Medicine at Sheffield University, UK) on February 20.

Seminar title: “Blame the parents: effects of parental stress on the offspring of model teleost fish”.

James Ord is currently conducting postdoctoral research at the University of Tartu on the molecular basis of epigenetic inheritance in zebrafish, having previously studied environmental epigenetics at the University of Sheffield (PhD) and environmental toxicology at Lancaster University (MSc).

Abstract: Parental stress, either in the context of pregnancy or pre-conception, is increasingly recognised as a contributing factor to offspring disease risk. While the majority of experimental work in this regard has been carried out using rodent models, the effects of parental stress are less understood in teleost fish, which offer several advantages as models of parental effects. This talk will present the findings from two sets of experiments: 1) the effects of maternal stress during pregnancy of a livebearing fish, the guppy (Poecilia reticulata), and 2) heritable effects of stress on the offspring of zebrafish (Danio rerio) which appear to be transmitted down the male germ line. Current work, which aims to elucidate the molecular basis of these male-mediated effects, will also be outlined.

Time: Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at 10.30
Place: Tartu, Ravila 14b, seminar room at 2nd floor

The seminar is organized by the ERA Chair of Translational Genomics at the University of Tartu (European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 668989)
